HackViolet “Best Design with Security in Mind”

HealthSpace is an app that builds a healthy journey between the BIPOC patients and healthcare specialists, building trust, comfort and accessibility to all. This project was a submission to HackViolet, a 24 hour female-empowerment hackathon with over 600 participants, and was rewarded “Best Design with Security in Mind.” I collaborated with two team members with specialities in business and marketing to produce a viable prototype.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

How can we use technology to provide BIPOC members with quality health care?

The Problem

Systemic racism is putting black women’s lives at risk

According to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), healthcare providers are less likely to deliver effective treatments to people of colour when compared to their white counterparts. Perhaps more disturbing statistic is that black patients are more likely to receive less desirable treatments.

Studies show that 60% of black women in Canada experience racism in the healthcare system.

In fact, black women are also three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women.

Mental health doesn’t discriminate, so why do BIPOC communities have difficulty accessing care?

Black women are not receiving the same quality of health care that their white counterparts receive.

Research shows that BIPOC groups are:︎

  • ︎Less likely to have access to mental health services
  • ︎Less likely to seek out treatment
  • ︎More likely to receive low or poor quality of care
  • More likely to end services early

Providers do not reflect the communities they serve

In 2015, approximately 86% of psychologists were White while by contrast, only 2% of American Psychological Association members were Black. The lack of diversity can create a significant gap in experiences and understanding between providers and those seeking treatment.

The Solution
The Product

HealthSpace is creates a safe, accessible space for the BIPOC community to connect with culturally competent BIPOC healthcare professionals.

Product Goals
  1. Connect users with BIPOC healthcare professionals based on preferences
  2. Virtual health assessments
  3. Keep track of appointments and medical records
PHASE 01
Initial Research
To better understand the problems within the healthcare system, we gathered information from online sources and conducted brief user interviews.

User Research

Twitter as a resource

Before moving straight into development, my team conducted user research, giving us a clear vision of the problem and our potential solution. We found Twitter to be an effective resource to observe personal experiences and encounters with racism in the health care system.

These tweets were a combination of experiences in Canada and UK.

User Interviews

Understanding our users

Despite the limited time given, we still felt it was necessary to conduct interviews with BIPIC members to enhance our understanding about where the health care system failed to fulfill their needs. We successfully interviewed 10 different BIPOC participants ages 20-45.

Questions

  • Were there any barriers that prevented you from seeking health care in the past?
  • What is your process in seeking a healthcare professional and what factors do you take into consideration? I.e. location, references, cultural preferences, etc.
  • Describe your previous experiences with healthcare specialists. Did you feel safe and comfortable?
  • Would having BIPOC health care professionals enhance your health care?

Insights

In finding a health care specialist...
  • Four people did not have family physicians, and choose health care specialists based on convenience.
  • Seven BIPOC participants have yet to seek mental health care, despite signals to do so.
  • Three BIPOC participants have changed their doctors on multiple occasions due to lack of comfort with their health care specialist.
  • All BIPOC participants would prefer a BIPOC therapist if the choice was available.
  • One person said language was a barrier to access social services.
When interacting with a health care specialist...
  • Two participants have experienced a form of mistreatment with a health care specialist.
  • A participant’s close family member was denied necessary screenings and evaluations during their pregnancy.
  • All BIPOC members agree that there is systemic racism within Canadian healthcare.
  • One person said they received negative feedback for requesting a female doctor.

HealthSpace’s Key Concepts

The Four Pillars
  • Build trust and reliability with healthcare professionals through certified reviews and communication.
  • Provide accessible virtual health scans and assessments and recommend professionals in local areas.
  • Promote comfortability by giving patients control in their decisions, allowing them to filter health professionals based on preferences.
  • Ensure the platform is a safe space to share health experiences with licensed professionals.
PHASE 02
Conceptual Design
The conceptual design phase involved bringing ideas to life and developing user flows and low fidelity wireframes to depict the overall functionality of the app.

Mid Fidelity Wireframes

Prior to developing high fidelity wireframes, we generated mid-fidelity wireframes to inform the functionality of the app. This is also when we began to define specific elements and visual hierarchy, providing more accurate depictions of the layout.

PHASE 03
Final Design
The final deliverables for this project consists of high fidelity interactive prototype on Figma.

REFLECTION
Concluding Thoughts
Making a viable product
Working with a team of business students with marketing backgrounds, I felt that I learned a lot about the relationship between product design and business strategy. For instance, we all understood the importance of research and strategy in the discovery phase, where we worked closely on conducting a mix of secondary and primary research and analysis to understand the problem we were solving. Having similar experiences in this research stage was helpful in ensuring that we were on the same page and working towards the same goals.

In other ways, we were also able to share different perspectives. While I was more concerned about the the usability and user experience of the product, my team members were most helpful in seeing the bigger picture–making sure the product was viable and ties in with market needs and consumer preferences.

Working with a team of different background was a learning experience that helped me improve my skills in communication, problem-solving, and leadership.
